Gene’s trademark microphone. (Fred Wostbrock Collection) It’s never enough for a hit show to be a hit show. When enough eyes are drawn to a television series, writers step forward to ask the same question: “Why?” And plenty of folks were willing to step forward to elaborate on the enormous success of Match Game ’75. A reporter named Donald Davidson was particularly intrepid about rounding up interviewees and trying to zero in on the secrets to the show’s appeal.

Veteran host Bill Cullen, who, like Gene, travelled from the east coast a few times to appear as a guest panelist for Match Game, felt that, weak as the game itself may have been, it deserved some of the credit. He explained to Davidson, “Certainly, it is more of a comedy show than any other game show on the air… Game shows take an amount of participation by the viewing audience. They need to make a good stab at the game to stick with it. The Match Game is simply a vehicle to derive from.”

In other words, yes, the comedy was a major attraction, but viewers also liked conjuring up their own answers and seeing how they would have done if they were actually in the studio trying to earn a shot at the big money. Gene had his own opinion of what made the show work.
