Rymor

Hannah

My return to Rymor was an emotional experience that had begun with my reunion with Dan and the rather candid conversation with Coco. There had been little respite since.

The interviews had been stressful. Rehashing events in Shadowland had stirred up feelings and thoughts I would much rather have left to settle. Knowing I wouldn’t face charges had helped me to speak freely. Yet, parts remained too painful and private to disclose to the temporary ruling council. I’d been honest, though; just circumspect about some details. I had decided that was right, given what I’d been through.

Post-interviews, I’d been free to return to being Hannah Duvaul, the technical master who hoped one day to become a grand master.

My new life felt odd. Shadowland and its people had captivated me, untethering me from societal restraints. Being thrust back into Rymor now held all the tangibility of a dream. Yet that perspective was quick to shift back again. Rymor was familiar and ingrained in the greater portion of my life. Shadowland and my wild adventure there seemed to be fading too soon.

I knew it was real. I had been there. Yet, it didn’t feel like it anymore. It felt like a stranger had invaded my body and taken it on a wild and terrifying ride.

Here you go, that other Hannah seemed to say, with a little gesture as if urging trouble away. You can have her back. I’ve finished with her. Like a sleepwalker, I went about my business. I shared comfort with Red, yet every day and every step took me closer to the old version of me, the one I’d come to despise.

Bill was gone, fled to Talin in Shadowland, and that struck a discordant note. I still feared that he would return and tell everyone I was lying. Thankfully, I was too busy to dwell on it, since once the interviews were finally over, we had been enlisted to resolve the power issues.

Anyone with even passing ancient technology skills had been enlisted. The team I was with was now based at a remote research facility in Rymor’s semi-wild lake district. Our one goal was to restore power to the wall. We had relocated there four days ago after the interviews were concluded.

I’d learned to put away my grievances with Joshua. It was a pity Joshua hadn’t done the same. He seemed to enjoy making snide comments whenever we were alone. As irrational as it was, I felt he blamed me for his actions. I avoided him when I could and ignored him when I couldn’t. If my recent life experiences had taught me anything, it was to focus on what was important.

Despite my reluctance to take any personal time, I needed time with my family if I was ever to concentrate on my work. Despite the curfew in place, I was granted special permission to travel to visit my brother-in-law and nephews.

“Let me come with you?” Red urged, his watchful eyes holding mine. “You don’t need to do this alone.
