Chapter Seven

“Nice place,” Mark said as he and Lisa entered her twelfth-floor suite. He surveyed the living area. TV. Sofa. Desk with laptop that was attached to the room’s Internet connection. Small refrigerator and microwave. Two side chairs and a square table covered with piles of file folders. Exactly like every other hotel room except for its choice of colors.

“This suite is actually one of the better ones I’ve lived in,” Lisa said, not noticing his frown as she closed the door behind him.

“It’s not bad.”

“No, it’s not. One nice thing about a full-service hotel is that they offer it all—why else would all those people live at the Plaza in New York?”

She sounded nervous, as if somehow worried about his approval of her living arrangements. Mark winked at her. “Okay, even I have to agree that there is something to be said for not doing your own laundry or cleaning up after yourself.”

“I should go get out of these clothes,” she said. “The TV remote is on that table, so make yourself at home. There’s some soda in the fridge.”

As Lisa entered her bedroom and shut the door, Mark had to admit he was anticipating the evening. What he wasn’t looking forward to was the phone call he knew he’d eventually have to make. Darn Joann. She just might be right. Lisa, who he’d craved heart and soul at the wedding reception, could loosen up and be a woman he could fall for.

She’d impressed him by not checking her phone once that day. Furthermore, he’d had a great time touring Kimmswick’s antique and specialty shops with her. She’d even indulged when they’d gotten cookies and brownies at the Blue Owl’s bakery. He’d noticed that Lisa was very particular about her food, especially the portions she consumed, not that she had anything to worry about.

Her body was perfect. Delectable. Definitely off-limits. He sighed once. He was an idiot.

Where had that “just friends” crap come from? He didn’t want to be friends with Lisa. He wanted her. He wanted to kiss her, to press his body next to hers. He was intrigued by the grown-up Lisa Meyer. He wanted to dig below her surface, but she was leaving in November, so there was really was no point in investing a lot of emotional energy.

Unfortunately he wanted to do just that. She’d even apologized. His victory had been bittersweet, as it had proved how different she was from women like Alanna. Money didn’t mean much to Lisa, unless it was heading into the political coffers she loved so much. Lisa also didn’t care that Mark drove a Porsche, and after her lecture the other night about his house being too big, he could tell she didn’t care much about keeping up with the Joneses.

Sure, she moved at light speed and seemed morbidly overobsessed with her career, but despite those things, Lisa was a breath of fresh spring air. Invigorating. Challenging. Her mind was sharp. She cared little for his “stuff” and more about his brain.
