Chapter Ten
Forsaken
âTABBY?â I ASKED, closing and locking the door behind me.
âWhat?â she called from inside the bathroom.
âNever mind. Finish what youâre doing.â No sense in her stopping when I could wait for a bit.
Lucy and Doc were seated at the table. The curtains were open and the sunlight streamed through both of them. They werenât doing anything, not even talking.
âHowâs things now?â I asked them.
âOkay,â Lucy said. Isaac meowed from the bed.
I walked over and scratched him behind the ears. Then Tabby came out of the bathroom.
âI was thinking. It might be a good idea to ward the car today,â I said.
âAll right. I can do that.â
I was glad when she didnât ask what the rush was. I wasnât sure if I should tell her about the birds or not. She was under enough stress. I grabbed the iPad off the nightstand and loaded it up. Then, I went to my email. I poured over every email Iâd gotten from the Order. No contact information. No nothing. âDammit.â
âWhat?â Tabby asked.
âAll theyâve left me for contact info is email.â
âOkay. While I donât like it, it never seemed to bother you before.â
âI didnât need to talk to them urgently before.â How could I have been so stupid? I remembered a letterhead from the tax forms I signed, but those files were now mysteriously gone from the tablet. Great. Yet another thing to drive me crazy. But tax forms werenât something to worry about now.
Tabby perched next to me on the bed. âWe could try to interrogate Vespa. Or maybe help him remember somehow.â
âI donât think I want to interrogate a demon yet. But if we could figure out a trigger for Vespa to remember the terms of the contract, Iâd be all for it.â The less I had to do with the supernatural these days the better.
âYou call Vespa. Iâll start packing. Tell him we want to begin. And that heâll need to expect houseguests for the conceivable future.â
âWorks for me.â It was an option and better than sleeping out in the desert. Less chance of scorpions, except for the demonic variety. I wasnât all that crazy about going to live with him, especially when we didnât know if he had anything to do with the break-in, but we needed out of a place we couldnât trust at all. I didnât want to visit a repeat of the Isaac affair.
I grabbed my phone and clicked Vespaâs number. He answered on the second ring.
âMr. Holiday. It is good to hear from you,â he said.
I rolled my eyes. I wished he would stop all of the faux elegant crap. I knew that part had nothing to do with the demon, just Vespaâs perception of what was high-class. âTabby and I were thinking.â I swallowed my revulsion of him. âWeâve done all the research we can, but now we need your help to finalize things before we begin the exorcism process.â
âWhat did you have in mind?â he asked.
âWe were thinking if we could find a trigger, something that would make you remember, it would help.
