Subject: seeing you soon

So I got AnoniCon tickets today. I know I’ve been like every year, but this year will be different, because I’ll get to see you. B

I gagged a bit at the thought of the writer of these weird emails being in the same room as Riley. But another part of me thought I might be overreacting. What were they going to do in a room full of people, anyway? The security would be insane, and they’d get anyone who tried anything weird, just like that guy at the award show. ‘B’ was probably lonely and had no one else to talk to and just wanted to meet her – perhaps there was nothing sinister about it.

And then something struck me. What if B was the little boy in the picture? What if, all this time, I’d been going to great lengths to hide these emails when actually they were something she should see, because her long-lost child was trying to contact her? What if Cam knew about it and that’s why he told me to leave it alone? I thought about my own mum and my heart ached. How I would have done anything for another moment with her. For the chance to tell her about my life, ask her advice, hold onto her and never let go.

‘Katy?’ I jolted, closing the incriminating window. Riley was leaning on the door frame to her office, tapping her scarlet nails against the wood. ‘Wanna go for a walk? I need a break.’

I locked my computer and sprang to my feet. ‘Of course.’

We walked along London Bridge side by side, the city sparkling clean under a fresh coat of rain.

‘You know,’ I said, ‘I was standing right here when you called me to say I got the job.’

‘You remember exactly where you were?’

‘It’s like I already knew it was going to be different from all the others. I really wanted it.’

She laughed, leaning on her elbows on the side of the bridge. ‘I would’ve never thought that when I first met you.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Well, right from the start it was clear that you’re not arsed by anything.’

‘You say that like it’s a good thing. I’m not sure I would have hired me based on that quality.’

I could see Tower Bridge opening in the distance, its metallic arms reluctantly releasing a cargo ship into the Thames Estuary. Someone once told me it’s supposed to be good luck to see it opening. Perhaps it was doing the same thing when I was standing here a few months ago; clearly there was some kind of luck on my side to get this job. Riley turned around to see what I was looking at, and we watched side by side as it sailed through and the bridge closed once more. Then she smiled at me.

‘But I know that, when you do care, you really care, and you’re not making it up because that’s what you think I want to hear.’ She was quiet for a moment as she watched the boat slowly disappear from view.
