Chapter Thirty-Seven

Hades

COME GET IT, DEMON. Does she think I don’t want to? That I don’t ache to? Feeling and tasting what my shadows did isn’t enough. Seeing her come, hearing her scream for me. Beg for me. She said she was mine. For a moment, I thought it was a fantasy, another one featuring Persephone. It wouldn’t have been a surprise. Yet it was reality.

It isn’t enough.

I want more.

I need more.

Persephone: Looks like you’re going to have to wait longer if we’re following your ridiculous terms.

My ridiculous terms? Oh right. Her lack of singleness.

Hades: Oh? There go my plans for working today with you on my lap.

I dress for work, and sit at my desk at precisely eight in the morning. Though my eyes keep looking up at the elevators, waiting for her to arrive.

When she finally steps off the elevator, she’s dressed to kill. And she’s dealt a fatal strike to my resistance to her. She’s in a tight black pencil skirt, which emphasizes her ass. Every step she takes in those heels makes my heart pound. Her dark red shirt is low, but professional. The color might as well be a flag waved in front of my nose.

Come and get it, demon.

Hades: I know what you’re doing.

She settles into her office, but my eyes don’t leave her. Especially when those wicked lips of hers curve as she reads my message. She looks up, blowing a kiss at me through the walls before responding.

Persephone: What am I doing, sir?

My eyes spark at her from across the space, barely glancing at my phone as I type out a reply.

Hades: You’re trying to make me forget that you’re not single.

That you’re not mine yet.

She bites her lip, and I watch her fingers fly over the screen.

Persephone: Well, my opportunity to be single has just been delayed by at least a week. Probably two.

My heart slams against my ribs.

Hades: …and you will be single then?

She’s hinted at it, but this is the first time she’s said it so point blank. Giving me a time limit. Fourteen days until she’s mine. I’ve waited this long. I can wait longer.

Persephone: Looking forward to the company-wide meeting today.

Why? I turn to catch her watching me. Her eyes pinning me to my seat. She locks her phone, placing it down on the desk. She looks away from me, starting to work. I groan, diving into my own work, avoiding looking at her.

By the time the meeting starts, I’m in my typical seat at the black marble conference table at the front. Persephone arrives in a cloud of her mouthwatering scent, sitting in the seat next to mine, her notepad and pen on the table next to me.

I nod at her, trying to figure out her games, and look up as the speaker begins, the meeting all wrapped to the presentation.

“We’ve just finished the absorption of the new mining colony in Africa and are beginning the transition from the use of diamonds to the synthetic alternative. Of
