They took a taxi which brought them the scenic route. The guy was rude and uninterested in conversation. Chelsy watched as the fare moved like a petrol pump display, the numbers jumping like bare feet on hot coals.
They arrived on a quiet side street in Swiss Cottage. Chelsy and Daisy got out without thanking the driver or leaving a tip. He sped off as the back door closed, the wheels spinning like a hamster on speed.
Grabbing her phone from her jeans pocket, Chelsy opened the notes app and found the address. 'I think it's across there.' She pointed to a large, semi-detached house at the end of the street. It looked dark and unoccupied. The lights were off, and the front window was boarded up.
'This can't be the place,' Daisy insisted. 'It's like a squat.'
They stood outside, hesitant of approaching the front door.
'I'm sure this is it.' Chelsy looked to the top window. She gasped as she spotted a figure there. A woman with long, dirty-looking hair, and a pale complexion stood, motionless, peering down at them.
Chelsy looked away, turning to face the other side of the road. 'Let's go. I don't feel good about this.' She turned back. The woman was gone.
'Let's give it a go. If we don't feel comfortable, we can always leave.'
The front door opened after Daisy knocked confidently on it three times. She walked forward, followed by a reluctant Chelsy.
'You've come for a reading?' the lady asked. Her hair was lengthy, greasy-looking; her face a ghostly pale complexion with heavy bags under her dark brown eyes. She grinned, revealing her blackened teeth, one of them pushed outwards, almost hanging on her bottom lip. She was short and bony looking, giving a deathly appearance.
'That's right.' Chelsy introduced them both.
'Come this way.' The woman turned and started walking through the house.
As the girls were making to follow her, another taxi pulled up.
Annette jumped out of the back, an enthusiastic look on her face, the passion evident. 'Hey, you two. Sorry if I'm late,' she called over while paying the driver. She walked to Chelsy and Daisy, still standing on the doorstep, hugging them both a little too tight. She wore a knee-length black skirt, ankle boots and a white blouse. Her black hair was tied back, and she wore minimal make-up. Her skin was clear, lightly tanned, and her deep brown eyes were full of anticipation.
'Wow, calm down.' Chelsy laughed. 'I can feel the energy coming off you.'
'Thanks for this. I've been looking forward to it for ages,â Annette insisted. 'Right. Let's go.'
The three women stepped over the threshold and closed the front door.
