SAND AND MUSSET LIKED to refer to their liaison as a “novel,” but the author of this novel—or at least of its initial outline—was neither Sand nor Musset but Sainte-Beuve. Most of the inspiration had been his; then the two characters embraced their destiny, and he filed away his outline in the back of his mind. Now that they were back in Paris and obviously unhappy, he was overcome by an access of remorse and took steps to scotch the tale he had helped to create. After visiting a distraught George sometime in November 1834, Sainte-Beuve called on Alfred and found that he had gone out, so he scribbled a message on the back of a visiting card:

My dear friend, I came to see you to beg you not to see or to receive the person whose affliction I have witnessed this morning. I gave you bad advice when I urged a reconciliation—the time was not yet ripe. Do write her a kind word, but don’t see her, it would hurt both of you too much. Forgive misleading counsel.
