“ARE YOU SURE you didn’t take it off?” Laurent asked me. He stood a few feet away from me near the desk in the suite. His eyes still glazed from watching me root around outside, mining every inch of snow like a frenzied gold digger.

I flailed my arms at him and bits of twig flew off me and drifted to the floor. “Of course I’m sure! I never take it off when I’m away from home.”

He stepped closer. “Okay, okay. Calme-toi, mon lapin, it has to be here somewhere. We’ll find it. Maybe you should check your room again.”

After my mining on the balcony came up empty, I’d ran back to my suite and searched every place I’d been, paying close attention to the bathroom and the bathtub. My hunt was fast but thorough, no help from Adam who was still so conked out he’d only groaned and covered his face with a pillow when I’d swamped the suite with light for my search and rolled him over as I frisked the bed. The locket was nowhere to be found.

“It’s a waste of time.” I worked to hold in a sniffle. “It’s gone. My mother’s locket. Just gone. And on Valentine’s day of all days. This is supposed to be the day of love and happily ever afters. This is so not happy.” My lip trembled at the corner of my mouth. My British ancestry had blessed me with a stiff upper lip that was threatening to loosen like a broken dam. That loosening could lead to blubbering and all sorts of emotions could leak out and turn into a full-blown flood in no time. I couldn’t let that happen. I had to have dropped my locket on Sergei, and I needed to focus if I wanted to find him and get my locket back. I had no time for an emotional flood.

I willed my mouth to tighten and mumbled through clenched lips, “Maybe we should call the police.”

Laurent cast a gentle smile my way as he picked a twig out of my hair. “I know how important it is to you, but I don’t think the police will help with a lost locket.”

“Not for the locket,” I said, wandering over to the kitchenette. “For Sergei.” I opened drawers until I came across a box of baggies, withdrew one, inverted it, and headed off to the bathroom. I cloaked my hand in the baggie, went over to the tub, and retrieved the button from the drain. I stood and removed my bag glove, peeling it off so it turned right-side out again with the button safely enclosed. If I’d learned one thing from Laurent and Camille since joining their PI firm, it was to treat possible evidence with care.

I held the bagged button up to Laurent who had come in behind me. “I’m thinking we show this button to the police and tell them about Sergei’s disappearance.”

He took the baggie from me. “I don’t think it will help.”

“How can you say that? I told you I saw buttons like that on Sergei’s jacket.
