Chapter Ten

Eli

The week following our brunch date was a whirlwind of coffee runs, park outings, and even a trip to a computer museum that Jackson found in a nearby city. With the first day of school hanging over our heads like a bad omen, we pushed our connection to its limits, hoping it would be enough to see us through our return.

Just yesterday, we could easily sense each other from opposite ends of the busy high street, leaving me quietly confident that we’re as prepared as we can be.

We also caught up with Uncle Jim and Harry a few times, and seeing how much Uncle Jim has taken Jackson under his wing warms my heart. I think Jackson lacked good alpha role models growing up, so I’m glad Uncle Jim can fill that role for him.

Now, it’s the eve of the summer term and time for our biggest test to date. To say that I’m apprehensive is an understatement.

Tonight, the football team has practice to kick off the summer. While the season is officially over, the old team stays on to mentor the younger players. So, Jackson will be on school grounds for a few hours tonight, and we’ve decided I’ll stay home.

God, I hope I can feel him when he’s so far away. Just the thought of being completely alone still terrifies me after my episode in the bathroom. Not being able to sense Jackson’s proximity, even mentally, makes me nervous.

As a distraction and a peace offering, Curtis is coming over tonight. He was livid when I called him a few days ago to tell him everything that’s happened.

It turns out that getting married without telling your best friend is a pretty shitty thing to do. Who knew? Well, I did. But in my defence, I went from devastated to infatuated, with no time to wrap my head around it, let alone explain it to anyone else.

Nevertheless, Harry’s words are ringing in my ears, and I’m determined to show Curtis that our relationship hasn’t changed. That he’s not just important to me. He’s irreplaceable.

And how could he not be? Curtis was the one person who stood by me when no one else would. When all the alphas pretended to scratch as I walked past and the other omegas turned their backs, he was there to dry my tears and remind me that I wasn’t alone. Curtis is truly precious, and I hope that one day I can repay his kindness.

Without Roger to help me in the kitchen, I’ve settled on a feast of Chinese takeaway and ice cream for dinner. Not that I think Curtis will mind, but I’m still eagerly counting down the days until Roger moves into the summer house.

It’s not that Jackson and I are incapable of fending for ourselves. I’ve just missed Roger so much. Fortunately, I don’t have to wait much longer. After visiting family around the country, Roger will join us as a housekeeper/Eli hugger.

Wow, I think my spoiled side is showing…

By ten to five, I’m perched on the kitchen counter, scrolling through takeaway menus for the evening.
