Kayla Winston was a sex worker in a rough city neighborhood. One night, she got abducted by a client and gang-raped in the back of a shitty take away restaurant, and when they were done with her, they kicked her and stabbed her and left her to die in a dumpster not far from there. Unbelievably, she did not bleed out, she got herself out of that dumpster and dragged herself to the street where she begged someone to take her to a free clinic. But the situation was bad, she needed surgery that the clinic was simply unable to provide. And though she hadnât spoken to her mom in over 8 months, she called her, and just said that itâs serious and that she needs help, the hospital they drove her to refused to perform any surgery unless they could get someone to pay, dearly. Her mother was upset and going through all kinds of hell right then, at once feeling so angry with Kayla for everything current and past, and also scared that her daughter got herself into such an apparently dire predicament. It took three hours and many phone calls to the hospital, bank and various offices and call-centers, but Kaylaâs mother managed to get a fast scalable loan, which then went straight for the medical expenses. Fortunately, Kayla made it through that night. Her mother was in a real state emotionally though, her daughterâs sudden trauma really shook her and in that moment all she wanted in the world was just that she could be there by Kaylaâs side right now, no matter how things are and whatâs what. However, the next morning after the surgery Kayla was refusing to answer her motherâs repeated calls to the hospital, Kayla just couldnât face her like this. By the afternoon, her mother pushed that loan to its limit and got on a plane, because dammit, she was going to see her daughter, no matter what, things cannot be like this. It was evening by the time a cab took her to the hospital her daughter was in, but it was too late, in the aftermath of the wreckage, that was her life, Kayla resigned from life with the option to forgo awareness. Kaylaâs mother never even got to properly say hello, let alone goodbye, and would now never see her daughter in person ever again. So, sitting there in the hospital lobby, less than a hundred meters away from Kaylaâs resignation pod, she could do nothing but sit there with tears streaming down her face, tuned in on her phone to the live stream from her daughterâs new life. She would never get any answers or closure about how Kayla was really living in the two years since she abruptly packed her shit and disappeared out the front door, or about the things that must have been going through Kaylaâs head when she made phone calls late at night odd months apart, with a voice that gave no answers, but clearly sounded like it was hiding an immense pain.
