Chapter Six

Hope read the message from Will three times before she believed it was true.

Alley Cats have found Missy’s owner!

It had been well over two months since Missy had snuck into Will’s house and given birth on his bed. All efforts to find the cat’s owner had failed and Hope knew Will was planning to adopt both Missy and one of her kittens if the situation didn’t turn around. The other kitten would go home with Hope and she couldn’t wait for the day her new flatmate moved in. Her soft furnishings were definitely going to suffer but the cuteness was going to be off the charts, and what could be better than a winter’s day spent reading with a cat curled up on her lap?

She messaged Will back immediately. Really? What does that mean?

Will is typing… appeared at the top of Hope’s screen. A minute later, she read his reply. It means she gets to go home. But the kittens stay here.

Hope thought for a moment. How is Brodie taking it?

This reply took a little longer to arrive and Hope could imagine why; Brodie had become very attached to Missy since her arrival – understanding that the cat needed to return to her rightful owners was going to be difficult. She’s sad about Missy going away but happy she gets to keep a kitten.

Another message arrived hot on the heels of the last. When are you going to take Topsy home?

Gnawing at her lip, Hope considered her reply. Whenever Brodie is ready. Maybe she’d like to come with me when I do, see him settled in his new home?

Will’s reply was instant. She’d LOVE that. Thank you! How about this weekend?

Shortly after she’d agreed, Will had rung Hope to delicately ask whether she might like to look after Brodie overnight. ‘Only if you’re comfortable with the idea,’ he said, managing to sound embarrassed and hopeful at the same time. ‘I just thought it might be nice, since she’ll be at your place anyway, settling the kitten in. Say if you’re not happy.’

It didn’t take a genius to work out what was going on, Hope thought – Will wanted Alex to stay the night. But since he hadn’t introduced her to Brodie yet, overnight stays were out of the question. Or maybe Will was planning to stay with Alex – Hope didn’t want to know. All she needed to do was say yes to having Brodie for a sleepover. She pushed everything else firmly out of her head.

Her suspicions were confirmed when she took Brodie home the following Sunday. There was no sign of Alex – Will was far too good a parent to foist her onto an unsuspecting Brodie – but Hope detected the hint of an unfamiliar perfume in the living room and saw two unwashed wine glasses by the kitchen sink. There were several long blonde hairs in the bathroom sink upstairs and somehow the house felt different. But it was none of her business, Hope reminded herself as a now familiar knot settled in the pit of her stomach.
