The house was dark when he pulled into the driveway. Tim glanced at the digital clock in the dash; it read 11:33. He stopped the car outside of the garage and turned it off. The headlights remained on for a few seconds before dimming to nothing, leaving him alone with the night. How was he going to go on? How could he stay in the same house with Miranda, knowing her betrayal?
âJust like I have for the last month,â Tim whispered out loud.
He started to get out of the car but paused, feeling the cold pull of his damp clothes. The seat was also wet. Miranda would notice in the morning and question him. Tim reached to the buttons on the door console and rolled the driverâs-side window down a few inches. Maybe the fresh air would dry the seat faster, and if it stormed, the wetness on the seat would be explained by the rain. Heâd catch hell from Miranda for leaving the window down, but it was worth it in contrast to coming up with a story to satisfy her questions.
Tim made his way along the walk to their two-story brick home and jogged up the stairs to the door. He hoped the lack of light wasnât a ruse and Miranda would be sleeping. He didnât want to try to explain his dirty, damp clothes and muddy shoes. The house remained silent when he shut the door behind him, and he waited for the annoying yap of Husky, Mirandaâs poodle, but no ear-shredding barks came. Tim thanked God for small favors, feeling ashamed even to be talking to God in light of the nightâs events, and made his way across the spacious mudroom to the utility sink. As quietly as he could he turned on the hot water and rinsed the soles and sides of his shoes off, making sure no chunks of dirt or sand clung to them. After placing his shoes in their customary spot beside Mirandaâs sneakers, he walked across the kitchen and flipped the light on over the stove. The counters were empty. But he hadnât really been expecting any leftovers since the meals they ate came from either Timâs limited knowledge in the kitchen or one of several takeout joints in town.
He reached for the fridge when hunger rumbled in his empty stomach, but with the hunger came renewed nausea surging from the pit of his gut, the tang of blood lingering between his teeth. He needed to shower and brush his teeth until his gums bled. Then he wanted to crawl into bed and sleep if possible. Weariness hung from every muscle fiber and pressed upon him, as his mind replayed the scenes from earlier in a never-ending loop. He rubbed the side of his face and snapped the light off, shadows racing to fill the void.
The door to their bedroom stood open enough for Husky to come and go as he pleased. Tim couldnât begin to fathom the number of times the bastard had plowed into his crotch when jumping onto their bed in the wee hours of the morning.
