CHAPTER EIGHT
A Friend
“Frank! Chris! Wake up!”
“Go away, Tommy. It’s still dark,” Frank whined, swatting at his brother.
“What time is it?” asked Chris, quickly sitting up in a daze.
“Time to go, that’s what time it is.”
Morning had come too soon for the tired boys. Taking turns keeping watch had cut deeply into their rest. Wearily, they dragged themselves down to the stream to splash some water on their faces. The cold water energized them. As the boys perked up, they were soon laughing, playing, and splashing each other.
Suddenly Chris grew serious, “Come on, guys, we’ve gotta get moving. We need to be on the trail as soon as there is enough light to carve out a path. We’ve got a long day ahead of us.”
After dressing and gathering their bedrolls, they quickly ate some fruit, nuts, and bread, then started on their way.
The boys were quiet and thoughtful as they continued on their journey. It frightened them to know that there were people somewhere out there who didn’t want them to get to the St. Marks Lighthouse; people who were hunting them down and more than willing to kidnap them. They didn’t know how many people were involved in this plan or who they could trust.
Tommy interrupted their thoughts, “Frank, who do you think is behind this plot to stop us? And those men that were with Sam, where’d they come from? How did they find out so much about us?”
“I really don’t know, Tommy.” Frank answered. “But I do know, if we succeed at the lighthouse, the whole Union strategy to take over Tallahassee will be jeopardized. My guess is that someone knows this and wants us stopped. The strange thing is that only a few people know what we’re up to and, except for Sam, they’re all part of the Lighthouse Brigade.”
“Aw, come on, Frank, there’s no way in the world that anyone in the Lighthouse Brigade would ever try to hurt us,” Chris reflected.
“But it is kind of unnerving,” interrupted Tommy, “to know that, for the rest of this trip, we’ll never know if someone is really trying to help us or if they’re gonna turn around and kidnap or maybe even kill us.”
As Frank and Chris thought about Tommy’s words, it took their breath away and sent a cold chill through their bodies.
“It’s probably my fault,” Chris added quietly. “I told Sam too much about our plans while we were traveling the other day. He knows exactly what you’re doing and where you’re doing it.”
“I really don’t think it’s your fault, Chris,” Frank interjected. “It was late in the day when you two had your conversation on the wagon. We were out in the middle of nowhere; no one could have possibly overheard you.”
“And, except for those few minutes in Luraville when he was unloading the supplies, we were with Sam the entire time,” added Tommy.
“If Sam’s buddies had been around him during the unloading, they should have been at the cabin when we arrived like he was expecting them to be.
