Chapter 13

Nate

Despite my earlier protestations, no one was readily available at short notice to relieve Hill for the evening, and to be honest, I hadn’t tried that hard to find someone. I was at a loose end, and it beat sitting at home in my room. Chloe would ask questions I couldn’t answer.

So I was en route to the safe house when Phill called.

“Nate. Eve’s in trouble. She activated her alert. How far away are you?”

“About five minutes. What happened?”

“I can’t get hold of her. She’s not answering her phone. Brandon and I are on our way. We’ll be there at the same time as you.” Tyres screeched.

“So we’ve no idea what’s happened?” This was another fucking shitshow.

“No, we’re going in blind.”

Please, God, let them both be okay. I couldn’t handle it if anything had happened to either one of them.

Hill had joined the force about two years ago and had become a valuable member of the team. She worked hard and was eager to please.

My main concern was Ollie. We couldn’t lose him, not now. He was an integral part of the investigation. My mind was working overtime. What could’ve happened? We’d been following up on some leads, but we still needed Ollie’s testimony to put Atherton behind bars.

I pulled up at the apartment at the same time as Phil and Brandon. Hopefully, whoever was in the apartment was unarmed. The chances of that happening were slim, though. While we knew Atherton’s men didn’t always carry guns, it was his trade, and if one of them was here to grab Ollie, they would most certainly be armed.

I opened the boot and grabbed my stab vest. Phil and Brandon did the same.

“Are you ready?” They both nodded. We ran to the door and yanked it open. We decided to take the lift. It was the quickest way up and would ensure we weren’t out of breath when we reached the apartment.

I counted each floor, cursing at the snail-like pace as we went up.

As we stepped out of the lift, my heart sank. The front door of the apartment was wide open.

We were too fucking late. We dashed inside. Hill lay on the floor in Ollie’s room. I rushed over to her just as she gained consciousness.

“What happened? How did they get in?”

Her eyes were glassy, and she probably needed the hospital. She may have been conscious, but her ability to speak had yet to return.

“Phil, check the rest of the apartment. See if Ollie is around.”

I knew it was futile. If Hill was out of it, the likelihood of Ollie still being here was zero. We couldn’t be too far behind and had to try to find him as soon as possible.

“Brandon, you stay with Hill. Phil and I will try to find Ollie.” The apartment building had only one lift, and we had used it, so the best place to check was the stairs.

“I’m okay,” Hill said. “Brandon, go with them. The guy had a gun.” She rubbed the back of her head and waved us away.
