THE LEGENDARY MAP

One of these incredible maps was the subject of much conversation: the Masayuki map. So popular among adventurers that it became an urban legend. It was discovered by a player, supposedly of the same name, after 170 hours’ exploration and spread very soon after the release of Dragon Quest IX, at the end of July 2009. The monsters hidden within were hugely popular and, one must say, somewhat upset the balance of the adventure.

At a Japanese developers’ conference at the Tokyo Game Show 2009, Yûji Horii claimed to be stunned by the success of StreetPass, the function that no-one really used: “I thought it would be fun if the person discovering the map became famous,” he explained, while continuing to play his DS to show off the intricacies of his design. As for the reasons for the phenomenal success of these map exchanges, he smiled at the crowd, replying in an almost magnanimous tone: “I thought that it would be interesting if reality eroded the virtual. We did it. I think, deep down, people love one another.” He ends his explanation with a laugh: “It just goes to show that everyone gets all excited if there is something to be gained.” And so, Masayuki and his map became part of the Dragon Quest10 legend.
