The guys were stumped. I said, “Gentlemen, I appreciate you coming to me with your idea, and if you were starting a side business that was education-based but focused on children or anything else not in direct competition with Learnit, I’d be open to it. It’s simply not acceptable for you two to start a corporate training business that would be just a rip-off of Learnit. I’m sorry, but the answer is no.”

Seven months later, the pair quit and launched their own corporate training company that was a pale imitation of Learnit. They weren’t even competition—competition has its own point of view. They’d simply copied just about everything from us, down to the course outlines and evaluation system I’d helped them design. The similarities were so obvious I was almost embarrassed for them and their glaring lack of originality.
