Right away, Dosie could tell things were different.
Jennifer Dupont, dark hair disappearing in a slick braid down her back, was as pristine as ever in the open doorway. She wore navy linen pants and a flowy, white silk button-down complemented by white leather loafers with a gold buckle over the top. Her blouse lay unbuttoned at the top, and a single pearl at the end of a golden Y-chain hung in the gap. Dosie admonished her mind sharply when it dared to imagine that that pearl was for her.
It's not. Things are different.
Different, because yes, Jennifer was as gorgeous as ever, but her posture was stiff and her face expressionless. The energy coming off her was odd, withdrawnâfar removed from the primal sort of chaos and control sheâd somehow always managed to wield at once, the spirit Dosie found so addicting. Itâs absence set her nerves alight.
You wanted this , she admonished herself. You were the one who said she should treat you like any other client. So, she told you her name. So what? It doesnât change anything. Youâre still just a client, and sheâs giving you what you agreed to. So, suck it up and go along.
âMs. Fisher,â said the woman on Jenniferâs arm, but Dosie was distracted by the large black duffle bag slung over her shoulder. âI have the Director for you.â
âYes, hi.â Dosie tripped over her own tongue and willed herself not to turn scarlet because of it. âUm, thank you. Come on in.â She watched as the mysterious black bag was passed to Jennifer, and Jennifer stepped over the threshold. The other woman waited until she was inside, then turned to leave. On instinct, Dosie called out to her. âI can get you something to drink! If you want? Or a snack?â She shifted awkwardly as both Jennifer and the other woman looked at her like sheâd grown a second head. âUm, is that okay to offer? I feel bad that you have to sit in the car for hours doing nothing while weâ¦.â She choked back whatever it was she might have said, and there was no amount of control that could stop the blush from devouring her cheeks. âAnyway, um, I can bring something out for you, if you want.â
The woman gave a surprised chuckle. âI appreciate that, Ms. Fisher, but Iâm fine. Thank you.â
âOh, okay, sure. Are you sure?â
âSheâs sure,â Jennifer said and closed the door. âNow, where to?â
They settled in the living room, because Dosie didnât think she could have Jennifer in her bed again, not if things were going to be like this. Different. Less intimate. Her bed felt too personal, and part of Dosie wanted to keep her memory of them together in it pristine and singular. If she couldnât have her like that again, she would have her elsewhere. Somewhere neutral.
âYou look amazing.â
âThank you,â Jennifer said as she dropped the black bag on the floor beside the sofa and sat. âYou do, too.â
Dosie wasnât sure she believed her.
