“THAT ONE LOOKS like a mouse in a parachute.” Noah pointed to a puffy cloud above them.

They’d made it back to the spot where they’d left their belongings. Sabrina lay stretched out on her sarong, while Noah used his jacket to protect his head and back from the sand. As considerate as he’d been all day, she couldn’t seem to shake a feeling of melancholy.

She cocked her head. The wind shifted the clouds. “I think it looks like one of those scary clowns.”

“Ah…could be.”

Casting him a sideways glance, she pointed to an indiscriminate puff. “And that one looks like a wilted rose.”

“So it does.”

Turning to her side, she faced him. She had to get out of this slump. It wasn’t fair to Noah. He was trying so hard to pamper her.

He was close enough to touch, if she reached out her hand. Her gaze drifted longingly over him. Sunlight glistened on his tan body. The man was pure temptation. “You’re being awfully agreeable today.”

He’d surprised her earlier when he’d invited her to brunch. She’d thought he’d want to wash his hands of her once she made it clear they weren’t having a fling. If she’d been thinking straight, she probably would have politely declined. His eyes had held such hope, though, that she couldn’t refuse.

“I’m an agreeable guy.”

She managed a small smile. “You do seem to be.”

“No, really…try me.” His eyes sparkled.

“Okay, let’s go for a swim.” Maybe the heat was getting to her, beating her down. A cool dip might be just what she needed.

He stilled. “That sun is on the warm side.”

“And the water looks fresh and cool.”

“Rejuvenating.”

“Yeah.”

He rose to his feet, brushed the sand from his backside, then extended his hand to her. “Come.”

Swallowing, she placed her hand in his, then let him tow her to where the waves broke on the shore. “Come on.” He coaxed her into the aqua water.

When she stood waist deep he let her go. “Okay?”

She scooped handfuls of water over her chest and shoulders. “It’s wonderful.”

With a small splash, Noah disappeared beneath the surf. He appeared again a few yards away, stroking smoothly across the water, his shoulder and arm muscles rippling in a show of strength. He was all dark beauty, sunbeams glancing off the water all around him, as he dipped again, then headed back.

Sabrina drew a breath, then dove shallow and long. Cool water swirled around her. She swam a few strokes, then rolled onto her back, kicking idly as the clouds drifted above her. Closing her eyes, she blocked out all thought and focused on her breathing—drawing air slowly in through her nose, then out through her mouth.

Gradually, she relaxed. A warm breeze skimmed over her. The water rocked her, buoying her along with its slow current. Music played from a radio far off down the beach.

“A penny for your thoughts.”

Startled, she lurched to the side, taking in water. Salt stung her nose. She flailed about and sucked in more water, then bobbed back up, gasping for air.
