Chapter 13
Night Terrors
Stan had spent a few hours in the company of the lovely Jo and she had given him a tour around the house. The place amazed him with its five bedrooms, at least seven bathrooms and toilets, and was even more amazed by the large temple situated towards the back of the house on the ground floor. The temple came complete with an altar, a black and white tiled floor, two large ancient Greek-style columns either side of the altar and various large wall hangings depicting the four Elements. That anyone would have a magic temple inside of his or her home was bewildering to Stan. âThis is generally where our Lodge meets,â Jo told him matter-of-factly. âEdward designed it and we are rather proud of it,â she said as they peered into the room.
Stan was also amazed by Joâs obvious reverence for the room which reminded him a bit of the way that Catholics behaved in their churches bobbing in front of the altar and making gestures. He could only imagine what happened in that room.
After the tour, they shared a coffee back in the library, which was evidently Joâs favorite part of the house outside of the temple room. âI too love to read, Stan,â she told him. âThere are over 5000 books in this library, many of which you couldnât buy for love or money.â
Stan looked at the books neatly lining the robust and ornate wooden shelving and rather shamefully thought of his own books lying in disorganized piles and heaps on the floor around his small flat.
Eventually, Jo suggested that she was tired and showed Stan to one of the guest rooms complete with a four-poster bed and oil paintings lined up on the oak-paneled walls. âThis is your room for the night, Stan,â she told him. âI am not far away, just down the corridor.â
Stan had enjoyed every minute of being with her and really had almost forgotten the earlier events of the day along with the pain radiating through the palm of his hand. Not only was she beautiful, intelligent and witty but there simply was, well, that magnetism about her. The closer he was to her, the more marvelous he felt and when she gave him a small peck on the cheek as she bade him goodnight he could feel his knees grow weak. If she noticed, she did not show it but Stan suspected that she did. As he watched her walking gracefully down the corridor he already felt lonely, but more than that he felt as if he had lost something important to his wellbeing. He sighed, a deeply resigned sigh and closed his door.
The room was almost as big as his entire flat, he thought as he lay down in the huge bed. His hand throbbed and his face felt sore too as he rubbed it gingerly. For Stan, reality had truly taken on a feeling of being unreal. In a matter of days, hours even, his cozy little world had turned upside down.
