I’M IN bed totally bewildered while Dina sleeps soundly beside me. I should be asleep, but I’m wide-awake. I have my leg akimbo and I’m twirling a lock of my hair.

The dinner at the pub should have been a one-off. I put on a smile when I returned to the table so Dina wouldn’t be embarrassed. I didn’t want her to feel betrayed by me.

Feelings of wanting to back out of this fake relationship plague me again. The longer this agreement between us lasts, the more pretending to be together wouldn’t be good for either of us. Or maybe I’m the only one who will fall apart after this if I don’t guard my heart, but the universe has other plans, it seems.

After today, I don’t think her boss will believe that we broke up and canceled the engagement during this trip. Because of my need to please and my natural personality, my inclination to perform, I’ve managed to dig myself into an even bigger, deeper hole. There’s definitely no backing out now.

I’m staring at the ceiling trying to figure out my next steps. I haven’t had a vacation since I started getting serious with my stand-up. I travel, sure, but that’s always for work. Putting your name out there means going from state to state and playing at all the different comedy clubs.

Based on what Dwight tells me during our calls, I’m doing well. I’m bringing in more people and my shows are selling out. That’s always good news for a comic who wants to make it in this business.

Performing at Edinburgh will definitely open doors for me. And that opportunity came from Dina. With all the women I’ve dated, I thought pretending to be Dina’s fiancée would be easy.

But there’s something about Dina that pulls me in every time I get near her. She’s like the sun, and I guess I’m a chunk of space rock. I was content to travel the universe until I got within her orbit. Her gravitational pull has reeled me in and refuses to let go. I’ve never met anyone quite like her.

Eventually my eyes grow heavy. My breathing becomes steadier. Until I finally close my eyes and drift off to sleep. My last thought of the night is the pleasure of seeing the blush on Dina’s face when I took her hand and pulled her toward the bridge where everyone waited.
