CROWTHER’S ISLAND, SOUTH PACIFIC

As the plane taxied to a halt on the tropical runway, the slight but stylish man strode over.

“Everything went well?” he said. “You have the payment?”

Jardine gestured at the two huge duffel bags resting on the ground between him and Henderson.

“And the men?”

“They obeyed orders excellently,” said Jardine. “It must be their military training.”

“Wonderful.” Crowther snapped his fingers and yelled something in Arabic. A few men came scampering over. “I will supervise the counting of the money and then make sure you both receive your share.”

“How do I know my family is receiving the money I send?” said Henderson. “How do I know you’re not lying to me?”

Crowther just stared at him for a moment and then smiled. “You don’t.” Then he walked away, following the men who were carrying the duffel bags of money.

Henderson looked on the verge of tears. Jardine walked away too, leaving Henderson standing there, unsure of what to do or which direction to turn on this island full of smugglers and contraband.

What he wanted more than anything at that moment was to return home.
