A sister ’s elegy

Al-Nadr the poet was killed because he had made derogatory remarks about Muhammad. But an elegy was composed in honour of the murdered bard. It was al-Nadr ’s sister in Mecca, Qutayla bint al-Harith, who foun d the words to express her pain:

I believe thou wilt reach al-Safra, O knight,

By the fifth day ’s first glimmer of light,

If that is what fortune dost decree.

Greet a dead man there for me.

Swift camels do ever bear,

Tidings from me to him there.

Tell of the tears I ceaselessly shed,

Or which end in sobbing instead.

Can al-Nadr hear me ever,

When it is him whom I do call?

Can a dead man hear at all,

When he can do no talking?

Worn out and weary and short of breath,

He was lead out to a cold-blooded death,

A captive in chains treated no better,

Than a beast when it is fettered,

With its forelegs bound together,

To his demise al-Nadr came walking.
