I showed the two of them around the carnival and introduced them to the crew. Abbas was proud of how smitten Masina’s grandmother was with Sophia. Masina’s eyes were wide as Buster crossed our path, and we were both tense as he gave a short bow and greeted the older woman like any other guest.

“Will your granddaughter age as beautifully as you?” he asked, kissing her hand.

Masina’s grandmother waved him off and we both gave each other a nervous glance as Buster flashed us a wide-toothed grin as he walked away. Grandma stopped to speak with Cookie when we came to the kitchen tent. I took the chance to step aside with Masina and she sighed, looking up at me with worried eyes.

“I am so sorry,” she rambled. “I could not stop her.”

“It is okay,” I smiled. “I enjoy her. She seems like a good woman.”

“She is,” Masina said, looking fondly across the tent. “She just meddles.”

“She wants things to go well for you,” I told her.

She nodded. “I know.”
