There was no other thought in Mr. Darcy’s mind other than his Elizabeth was truly his… finally, he would have her in his life forever, and nothing would take her away from him. The articles of engagement were of no consequence to him, for he would have agreed to anything, really, barring only items that would affect his sister, Georgiana.

Every night when he went to sleep, he gave prayers of thanks to the heavens for answering his pleas to make Elizabeth his. The only thing that gave him pause was the uneasy silence from Mr. Carroll, who had not responded to the break in the engagement in person, but only with a letter. The contents of that letter Elizabeth had not shared with him, and even his good friend Bingley could not be convinced to discuss it.

That worried him, but other than a few red-eyed moments, Elizabeth had seemed quite happy to forget Mr. Carroll and the fact that she had ever been engaged to him at all. However, his happiness over took him and distracted him so that he put aside his concerns over Mr. Carroll entirely.

More the fool, was he. He should have seen a confrontation brewing, or sent a hired agent to watch over Carroll for any signs that the man was planning something. If he had, he would have been forewarned and not taking Elizabeth out to walk in the parks that morning.

“I have never seen quite so fine a day,” Elizabeth said, as she sat on the sprawling blanket that his servants had laid out for them. Close by, Jane walked with her husband, hand in hand. They had an intimate corner of a copse of trees all to themselves, and such intimacies could be had between a married couple without anyone to carp and comment on it.

“I think it is your presence,” Darcy said in a fit of whimsy. Elizabeth laughed, and he was convinced it was the most beautiful sound in the world.

“My presence, Mr. Darcy?” she asked, raising her eyebrows at him, a mischievous smile upon her face.

“Yes,” he confirmed decisively. “I think you chase the clouds away, and make the sun put on its best attempt to impress us.” She giggled behind one hand, looking pleased with his praise.

“Oh, I think it is rather the gift of the winds that has blown the clouds away,” she said.

“Hmm, I think we shall have to agree to disagree on this particular topic, Miss Bennet,” he replied, and then gestured to the swath of empty cloth between them. “Come closer, Miss Bennet, for I believe I have a secret I am dying to share with you.”

“Dying, Mr. Darcy, that sound quite… well, dire.”

“Oh, it is, I assure you.”

“Well then, I must approach, although it is with the utmost of caution lest anyone think us to be anything but proper. We are not married yet, you see,” she said. He sighed.

“A fact that grieves me at this very moment. Please, do come close.” A smile broke out on his face when she moved over the blanket, closing the few inches that separated them.
