Out of the Frying Pan

Charlotte opened her eyes. It was dark. She blinked a few times but couldn’t see anything. Holding up her hand in front of her face, she gave it a wiggle and could barely discern the outline of her moving fingers. But the longer her eyes were open, the more she could see as they adjusted to the dim light. The illumination came from above her, from the ceiling of a very, very large room. Small lights were spaced evenly among the shadowy webbing of metal girders, casting a diffuse and blue-tinged luminescence that evoked moonlight on a cold winter night. She lay on her back on the floor. Her hands touched the surface. It was cold, smooth metal, vibrating very softly with a hum she couldn’t quite hear but that she felt in her body.

In one hand she held the Key; she could hear the jingle of the chain against itself as she raised it up to look at it. The blue lights sparked highlights in the metal rings and refracted through the center crystal. Charlotte was glad she had managed to hold on to it. It was smart of Willow to think of throwing it to me to save me from the Hungry Death. Oh crap! The Hungry Death! Charlotte’s heart surged with the memory. The last thing she had seen was the shiny wet blob coming straight for her. Sitting bolt upright, she whipped her head around, looking frantically in all directions, ready to spring to her feet and run, but there was no sign of the Hungry Death. All was quiet, and she couldn’t feel any mindwaves telling her to lie down and go to sleep.

Jeez Louise. She had thought she was a goner. She remembered the Hungry Death towering over a screaming Weber, the sudden rush and splat as it collapsed upon him, and the horrible crunching and popping sound as it ground Weber underneath its bulbous bulk. Her stomach lurched at the memory. She put her hand over her mouth, but she didn’t throw up. She took a deep breath in to settle her stomach. Not that she wasn’t glad that Nazi bastard was dead. He was a real creep, but jeez what a way to go.

Charlotte put the Key on and tucked it under her shirt. She stood up now and looked around. At first, she thought she was in a hallway. There were two metal walls on either side of her about ten feet apart, but then she realized she stood between what looked like two very large, long rectangular boxes. She walked to the end. The boxes were at least twice as tall as she was, and long enough to drive three or four cars into end to end. Now that she had moved out from between the two containers, she could see more containers around her. The room was huge. In the dim light, she could see just the faint hint of the far wall. It was at least a football field’s length away.
