She awoke to squealing kids and Monica telling them to ‘hush now’ and ‘get a move on.’ By the time Annie dressed and got to the kitchen, the kids were finishing breakfast and ready to be dropped off at day care after the trip to the airport. Annie was grateful to her friend and also grateful the traffic was very light as the two little ones, secured in their car seats, continually fought over the toys which were intended to keep them quiet and occupied. She was also glad there wasn’t any span of uninterrupted time to talk more about Mac. As Monica pulled up to the departure stop, Annie hugged her, thanked her again, and waved good-bye.

Checking in without incident, her flight took off promptly at 7:15 a.m. She had to change planes in Charlotte, with a short layover, but soon she was in the air again. A little over six hours later, she landed at Providenciales Airport; from there she went into the town and arranged to take a chartered boat to Pine Cay. Later that afternoon, she checked in at the resort and picked up the keys to the cottage she rented each year. She was greeted warmly and her single piece of luggage was carried out to the golf cart which she would drive up the beach to Lobo Fuerte, well out of the sight and sound of everyone at the resort, although at this time of year she knew there wouldn’t be many guests.

Lobo Fuerte, which had been recently renamed by the new owner, sat up on a small hill overlooking the bay. It was surrounded by trees which provided some shade from the sun, and the yard was lush with plants and flowers indigenous to the island.

A plastic dishpan was just outside the door and filled with water. Annie removed her sandals and shook them off; she stepped into the pan of water and then dried her feet with the towel that hung on a hook above the pan. Nothing elegant, just utilitarian and it served its purpose so sand wasn’t continually brought in.

Upon entering, she found the cottage to be immaculate as usual but noticed a few things had changed. The furnishings were new, the wooden floor had been recently sealed and polished, and the hammock on the front porch had been replaced with one that was big enough for two. Still, the cottage retained the feel of the island and she felt completely at home. She found two bottles of white zinfandel chilling in the fridge, along with the other food items she always requested.

After she unpacked her bag, she settled onto the hammock with a glass of wine. The southeasterly winds blew a breeze across her skin and it felt good. It had been a long couple of days, and after she finished her wine, it wasn’t long before she drifted off to sleep.

It was dark when she woke which didn’t surprise her, she had been tired. Now she was hungry; her stomach was aching for food and her heart was aching for Mac.
