Chapter 21
Jadeâs heeled boots click down the hall. I tail behind, my tennis shoes squeaking across the pounded copper. Even though I would much rather be prepping for our escape tonight, I didnât have a good excuse not to join her for more training. I guess loss of freedom is just another consequence of deception.
Today, weâre training inside. Whatever that means.
Jade leads me to the elevators and we drop undergroundâmuch further than the four stories the building seems to have. The enclosed walls and mysterious doors compress memories down into me.
âWhy arenât we outside?â I eye Jadeâs snug dress and dark makeup. The woman is a chameleon. âAnd why arenât you fighting today?â Without answering she exits the elevator, stalks down a hall and pushes through a swinging door into a large room.
Tonight. Iâll be free of her horrible social skills tonight.
Inside, she makes her way to the center of the room and a podium so small it looks like a post. Pulling a key from around her neck, she puts it in the top and turns the lock. Against the far wall, three screens lift from the floor. Before they stop, they rise at least fifteen feet into the air. In front of the podium, a chair and desk emerge from the floor. Jade takes a prim seat before twirling toward me.
âWhat you need is combat training.â She points at the screens as they and the floor light up. The scene wavers then clears, leaving an image looking remarkably like the island outside. From the desk, Jade hands me a pair of goggles.
Since sheâs being difficult, I slide them on without question. The sudden realism causes me to stumble backward. With the lenses on, the trees and vegetation of the island are suddenly alive. Their appearance is so authentic, I slide the glasses on and off a couple of times.
Jadeâs sigh draws my attention to her rolling eyes. âCan you take this seriously?â
Tipping the goggles up, I glare at her. âJust enjoying the life I have left.â
Her frown deepens. âYouâll enjoy it more by learning to stay alive.â She points to the scene and I slide the glasses back on. âYou can interact with anything you see on screen. Use whatever you find for weapons. There are no friendlies.â
Nodding as if everything she said was totally expected and commonplace, I step to the center of the lit floor. I clap my hands together. âIâm ready.â
âI doubt it.â I hear her say before the fight draws me in.
First, a man jumps from the tree to my right. I kick out knocking him back. He disappears. A shuffling in the trees draws my attention to another charging enemy. This one holds a knife in his hands. With a grab and a flick, I have the weapon. I slash at him and he vanishes. From above, a man drops. I roll away, throwing the knife simultaneously. It hits his chest and both he and the weapon disappear.
Two men rush me from opposite sides.
