Chapter Nine

A hard lump of fear and nerves lodged in Zadi’s throat. Ori glared at her, a look that sent shivers and sparks through her part zombie, part fairy, with a little bit of robot body. He wasn’t happy about this. Tamra had been chatting non-stop and jiggling around the inside of the blender, and her thoughts were a scrambled mess.

Nonetheless, Zadi kept her head high. This was her one chance of getting things changed around here. They were all scared of seeing a human, but not one of them had actually seen one. They knew they were there because there were piles of new items every day. Except now. This meant that things needed to change, even if Ori didn’t think so. Besides, they all knew he enjoyed having control over them.

It was time to change. That’s what she kept repeating in her mind as she stepped out of the blender. She took a deep breath, enjoying the fresh air. There was a smack of heat even though it was near the end of the day. She could hear the misfit monsters assembling nearby. There were nearly a hundred of them in total, and it was going to take a bit of time to get organized. This was typical of misfit monsters, as they preferred to do things chaotically.

Out of habit, Zadi went to pick up her hessian sack, which was sitting on the ground. She tried to forget that Yeneri had taken something, and the fork was that piece of metal she’d really wanted. Forks could be pounded with a mallet and used to change shape for use as something else. She’d like it back, but sitting in the blender with Tamra and Mab for a few hours had given her some perspective. There was a bigger issue to address here and it affected all of them. They all had the right and the ability to go hunting when they chose. They didn’t have to have it regulated like it was by Ori. It didn’t make them more or less safe, and it ended up making things more competitive between them all. And that wasn’t what their little community needed.

The saucepan fell out of her sack.

“Don’t lose that.” Mab quickly picked up the saucepan and handed it back to her.

She froze. Holding the saucepan.

“You all right, Zadi?” Mab asked.

An idea took root in her mind. Something she could say in the town meeting. A suggestion to ease the burden of now deliveries.

“Zadi, what’s wrong?” Tamra pranced up to her and shook her shoulders.

Zadi felt her robot parts shake hard, the movement bringing her out of her thoughts. “I’ve got it.”

“Yes, you’ve got the saucepan.” Tamra frowned. “Maybe this town meeting wasn’t a good idea.”

“No, it is. And I’ve got an idea of what to suggest to bring us all together.”

“See, I knew you’d do it.” Tamra smiled. “You’re very clever.”

“Well, I don’t know if others will agree to it.” After her mini-epiphany, nerves began to flutter in her belly.
