The moment I arrive in Saigon, I begin making arrangements to join up with Special Forces units. I have a telephone conversation with a transport info officer. “Don’t worry, Jerry,” he says. “We’ll take care of everything!”

I’m thinking, I’ll believe it when I see it. I know about the military’s promises.

I have a day in Saigon before heading off to follow the troops. It’s good to be back in Saigon—I have a sense of home here, even in the wild traffic with flocks of bicycles swerving in and around me as I cross a busy street.

I drop by to see Huan, who’s staying with Hy and Simone, his brother and sister-in-law, in their roomy and airy home, with red tile floors. As soon as I walk in the door, Huan runs over to me. “I’m getting married!” he shouts, with a broad grin. “You see, I’m following in your footsteps. I have a good woman too.”

“Félicitation à toi!” I say, basking in his joy. I’m delighted but not entirely surprised. Huan has been dating Anh for a year and they’ve known each other much longer. Their relationship has been complicated. He wouldn’t date her when she was his student. And even later, he worried about the age difference—she’s about ten years younger. But now—it’s all resolved and happy.

Hy, Simone, Huan and I are circled around the coffee table in Hy and Simone’s living room, with bright sunlight floating through the windows. And, though it’s still morning, I say, “Champagne! We need to make a toast!” And that’s what we do, all of us smiling, reveling with Huan in his happiness.
