TWENTY-EIGHT

The day Jack Montgomery was bamboozling Mike Gavin on the tennis court, Travis McBarb and Matt Burke were having lunch at a McDonald’s midway between their respective places of business. Matt, as usual, was treating Travis to the latest local gossip – political, sexual and miscellany – the latest, seeming to cover all categories, had it that a senator’s son who had long been on the fringes of Washington’s gay set was becoming more overt about his sexual preferences. And who was this brash young man? No one knew for certain but Matt had a list of possible candidates and named them for Travis.

“Why them?” Travis wanted to know.

“Elementary,” Matt bragged. “There are one hundred senators. I delved into their domestic lives and learned who among them had a son or sons. I made a list of all the male offspring over six and under twenty-six. I knocked off the few that were married and/or not living in Washington. The results are my candidates.”

“That’s as scientific as casting a horoscope to predict the future.”

“Didn’t Nancy Regan use horoscopy to run this country?”

“And look where it got us,” Travis said.

But Matt’s big news was that his paper wanted to cover both the celebrity tennis matches hosted by Jack Montgomery and the vice president’s party that evening honoring the participants. Matt volunteered to cover both assignments but his editor said he could do one, not both, and Matt chose the party over the matches. “It’ll give me a chance to see the players close up and maybe talk to a few. I know Mike Gavin will be there. He’s at the games as we speak and he’ll show up at the party with his pal, Jack Montgomery.”

Matt looked so pleased with himself, Travis thought he would take him down a peg and show him that life at the hospital wasn’t as dull as watching paint dry. Knowing Matt would tell him in great detail about the names he would rub shoulders with at the party, Travis told Matt he had not only been to a party with Johnny Jones but had caught Johnny in flagrante delicto.

Matt paused in the act of bringing a soggy fry to his lips and stared at Travis open-mouthed. Knowing that his friend did get invited to Washington soirees coupled with the fact that Travis McBarb never lied or exaggerated a tale, Matt didn’t for a moment doubt the doctor’s startling disclosure. Awed, or flabbergasted might be a more apt depiction of Matt’s reaction to the news, he blurted his gut reaction to the startling story – “Did you see his dick?”

Travis glanced around the eatery which, thankfully, wasn’t crowded. “Good grief, Matt, is that all you think about?”

Nibbling on the fry Matt shrugged and asked, “With Johnny Jones what else can you think about?”

“You might be wondering who Johnny’s partner of the moment was.”

“I do wonder, Troy, but you won’t tell me, will you?”

“Right. I won’t.”

“A Washington VIP?”

“A patient?”

“A VIP patient?” Matt concluded.

Travis looked at his watch.
