Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions of the People on Health and Welfare

The Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions of the People on Health and Welfare (Kokumin Seikatsu Kiso Chosa), begun in 1986, integrates four different surveys that had been conducted separately before then. The four old surveys were Kosei Gyosei Kiso Chosa; Kokumin Kenko Chosa; Kokumin Seikatsu Jittai Chosa; and Hoken Eisei Kiso Chosa. One big survey, covering about 290,000 households, is scheduled to be conducted every three years. Smaller-scale surveys are conducted during the other two years. The big survey asks questions in three categories: household composition, health conditions, and income and saving. Questions in the household-composition category include the age of the head of household, the ages and genders of other household members, and the types of pensions subscribed to or benefited from. Questions on health conditions include how sick a household member is, how often family members go to the hospital, and how long the members have been hospitalized. Income and saving (financial assets and housing conditions) questions are cross-tabulated along different household types, such as households with an elderly member (i.e., 65 or older).
