CHAPTER 5

The day passed in a blur after that. I accompanied Aaron while he did the things he needed to do, then we headed back to the shop whereby we had a busy afternoon.

He’d been true to his word and had started a series of posts about the ivory lace wedding dress, which he shared to our Facebook and Instagram pages. It didn’t take long for our phones to start ringing.

“Aaron can you please update the post to say that the dress is not for sale!” snapped Nancy after the tenth call in a row she’d received about it.

Thankfully I’d been kept busy with fittings, so I hadn’t been on phone duty.

Aaron dusted the knees of his navy-blue pants, removing the remnants of dirt from the attic floor.

“Did you find anything useful?” I asked him.

“I’ve just been going through the old records again. My next post is going to be about the history of the shop so I’ve taken some photos of the attic and the mound of records that we found, but other than that nope. Nothing useful.”

I nodded. He really was full of great ideas.

“I’ve brought down the patterns,” he continued. “I didn’t know if Mrs. Boyce would like them.”

Behind him was one of the old cardboard boxes. The top was open and I could see the yellowed edges of the pages within.

“I also thought I’d take home some of the old sales logs. The dress might be listed in there somewhere. It puzzles me as to why this one was kept but no others were.”

“That’s a lot of bed time reading,” I commented, knowing I wouldn’t make it past the first page before I fell asleep from boredom.

He shrugged. “I don’t mind. It gives me something to do in the evening. Plus my bedroom is so much warmer than it is here.” He grinned, rubbing the goosebumps from his arms.

“Some days her hot flushes are better than others. Today is a bad day.”

“So I’d noticed.”

“Hey Nancy,” I called as she prepared the shop for the end of day. “Can you give me a lift to Annabelle’s, please? She’s having an essential oils party and I promised I’d go.”

“What’s wrong with your car??” she snapped. It seemed that menopause was also making her irritable.

“The mechanic called to tell me that it isn’t going to be ready until tomorrow afternoon. Apparently there’s something wrong with the thing and they can’t get parts for it until then.”

“The thing?” Aaron asked, as he lifted the box full of ledgers.

“Yeah. The thing in the motor. It needs a new one.” I shrugged. As if I had any idea what the mechanic was actually talking about.

Aaron grinned. “Well, I hope he can get the part he needs. A motor needs its thing.”

Smart ass.

“I’m sorry Gracie,” interrupted Nancy, pushing the cash from the register into a bag, ready to hand it to Aaron. “I can’t give you a lift today. I have somewhere that I need to get to by five past.”

“Oh. Okay. No problem.
