The next day, Sunday, October 21. Today’s plan was to continue their two-pronged investigation. However, their level of motivation, especially Mikihiko’s, was higher than the previous day now that they knew their true objective.

Tatsuya, Miyuki, Minami, Minoru, and Masaki were going to Arashiyama, while Mikihiko, Erika, and Leo would travel to the Takaragaike-Matsugasaki area, where the Thesis Competition venue was located. The eight planned to leave the hotel early in the morning.

However, an unexpected accident occurred.

“…I’m sorry, Tatsuya,” Minoru apologized from his futon in a voice that made it sound like he was about to cry. He’d suddenly come down with a fever this morning and was now in no condition to go out on the survey.

“Don’t worry about it. You’re not responsible for this.”

“I’m just…so frustrated with myself.”

Tatsuya’s words of comfort only made the other boy scrunch up his face even more bitterly.

“Minoru, don’t blame yourself. You’ve done very well.”

The only ones in the room right now were Tatsuya and Minoru. The other members, save one, were waiting in the lobby.

“I’d heard beforehand you’re prone to illness. It’s not your fault, and I accepted this possibility when I asked you to help us out.”

Minoru averted his eyes.

“You’ve been enough of a help already. Without you there yesterday, we may not have ever discovered that conjurer’s restaurant.”

“…You mean it?” Minoru asked, his tone timid, still facing away.

“I really do.”

Slowly and nervously, Minoru returned his gaze to Tatsuya.

Tatsuya’s expression was straightforward as always. One couldn’t even charitably call it compassionate. But his face didn’t seem fake, like it would have if he had put on a smile for show. If the definition of sincerity was honest seriousness, Tatsuya’s gaze was sincerity itself.

“You’ve helped us plenty, and if it comes to it, we’ll probably have to get your help again. Don’t push yourself—that way, you’ll be ready then.”

“Am I still…one of you?”

“We won’t reach Gongjin Zhou today anyway. That’s when we’ll need your strength, so take it easy for now.”

“…All right.”

Minoru smiled weakly. He still looked depressed, but not like he was blaming himself anymore.

“We’ll leave Minami here. She might not look it at first glance, but she’s a housekeeping expert. And, same as you, she’ll be happy if you rely on her. Don’t hesitate to bring anything up, no matter how minor.”

Minoru gave a slightly abashed look. His face was red from more than just the fever. He was probably embarrassed Tatsuya had seen through to his character—someone happy to be relied on.

“I’ll leave your luggage here, so hold the fort while we’re gone.”

This meant after their investigation was over, they wouldn’t be returning to Tokyo right away, but rather, coming back here first.

“You can leave it to me.”

Understanding Tatsuya’s awkward kindness, Minoru offered a smile.
