ON WHY I AM (BECAUSE YOU ARE)

I think, therefore I am.” Like most products of Western culture, I have been trimmed to fit this portrayal of human nature classically formulated by René Descartes in the seventeenth century. Descartes is in eclipse these days, but the conviction that my thought makes me what I essentially am is embedded deep. Thinking comes easily to me, so the conviction is not only deep but also gratifying: if thinking makes me me, and I think well, then, to adapt a phrase of my father’s good friend, baseball Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean, “I may not be the greatest, but I’s up there amongst ’em.” The conviction, though, despite its appeal, is a huge mistake. When I used Descartes, as elaborated by a whole intellectual and academic culture, as my guide, I got the world wrong. I have spent much of my life trying to unlearn Descartes’ lesson.
