âLet me guess,â Magnus said, exhaling smoke. It made a white cloud in the shape of a heart that distorted as it drifted away from his mouth, expanding and twisting until it was no longer recognizable. âYou had the lemonade.â
Tessa and Will, now standing side by side, glanced at each other. It was Tessa who spoke first. âIâyes. Nate brought me some.â
âIt has a bit of a warlock powder mixed into it,â said Magnus. He was wearing all black, with no other ornamentation save on his hands. Each finger bore a ring set with a huge stone of a different colorâlemon yellow citrine, green jade, red ruby, blue topaz. âThe kind that lowers your inhibitions and makes you do things you wouldââhe coughed delicatelyâânot otherwise do.â
âOh,â said Will. And then: âOh.â His voice was low. He turned away, leaning his hands on the balustrade. Tessa felt her face begin to burn.
âGracious, thatâs a lot of bosom youâre showing,â Magnus went on blithely, gesturing toward Tessa with the burning tip of his cigar. âTout le monde sur le balcon, as they say in French,â he added, miming a vast terrace jutting out from his chest. âEspecially apt, as we are now, in fact, on a balcony.â
âLet her alone,â said Will. Tessa couldnât see his face; he had his head down. âShe didnât know what she was drinking.â
Tessa crossed her arms, realized this only intensified the severity of the bosom problem, and dropped them. âThis is Jessamineâs dress, and sheâs half my size,â she snapped. âI would never go out like this under ordinary circumstances.â
Magnus raised his eyebrows. âChanged back into yourself, did you? When the lemonade took effect?â
Tessa scowled. She felt obscurely humiliatedâto have been caught kissing Will; to be standing in front of Magnus in something her aunt would have dropped dead to see her inâyet part of her wished Magnus would go away so she could kiss Will again. âWhat are you doing here, yourself, if I might ask?â she snapped ungraciously. âHow did you know we were here?â
âI have sources,â said Magnus, trailing smoke airily. âI thought you two might be up against it. Benedict Lightwoodâs parties have a reputation for danger. When I heard you were hereââ
âWeâre well equipped to handle danger,â Tessa said.
Magnus eyed her bosom openly. âI can see that,â he said. âArmed to the teeth, as it were.â Done with his cigar, he flicked it over the balcony railing. âOne of Camilleâs human subjugates was here and recognized Will. He got a message to me, but if one of you was recognized already, whatâs the chance it could happen again? Itâs time to make yourselves scarce.â
âWhat do you care if we get out or not?â It was Will, his head still down, his voice muffled.
âYou owe me,â Magnus said, his voice steely. âI mean to collect.â
Will turned on him. Tessa was startled to see the expression on his face. He looked sick and ill. âI should have known that was it.â
âYou may choose your friends, but not your unlikely saviors,â Magnus said cheerfully.
