A loud blaring sound made Simon wake up from a deep sleep. He groaned and rolled over, smacking his alarm clock to shut it up.
The sound continued. Simon hit the clock again, but the sound didnât stop.
He propped himself up onto his elbows and woke up enough to realise that it wasnât his alarm clock making the sound; it was coming from outside.
Red and blue lights flashed up through his bedroom window and made patterns on the ceiling. A car rushed somewhere through the village.
Simon threw the covers off his body and slid off the bed, making sure to avoid Jonathon who was still asleep on the floor. The box lay shut beside him. Simon picked it up and left it on his bedside table. It felt heavier, but he certainly didnât want to open it.
Police cars and ambulances circled the village. People were everywhere; they dashed frantically around still dressed in their pyjamas and dressing gowns.
'Jonathon, wake up,' groaned Simon.
Jonathon groaned and rolled over.
The police cars and ambulances were gathered at the edge of Ryanâs street. The flashing lights lit the surrounding houses in an eerie red and blue glow.
'Jonathon, get up,' said Simon. He kicked Jonathon in the side.
'What?'
'Somethingâs happened. There are police cars and ambulances at the other side of the village.'
'Grandma!'
Jonathon shot to his feet and ran over to the window.
'Oh, phew, itâs not our street.'
'It could be Mr McKenzie; he has been sick for a while.'
Helen and Brian appeared below. They were still dressed in their pyjamas, but they broke into a jog as they made their way out of the garden gate and across the village green.
'Come on,' said Simon. 'This must be serious; letâs go.'
Simon put on his slippers and joined Jonathon, who was still fully dressed from the night before, and then ran outside and across the village green.
Unsurprisingly, Jonathon had remembered to grab the box and he held it securely beneath his arm. He was desperately trying to hide his grin because he knew that it felt heavier than it had the night before.
There must have been twenty villagers gathered together in the middle of the street, talking nervously. They watched as a policeman wrapped yellow tape to the outside of a fence.
The fence right outside Ryanâs cottage.
'Whatâs happened?' Simon asked his dad.
'Simon, get back to the house.'
'Whatâs going on?'
'I donât know, son,' said Brian. 'Your mother had a very strange phone call from Mrs Thomas this morning. She was very upset. The next thing we heard was all this commotion.'
Suddenly everybody stopped talking as a loud, pain-filled scream came from inside Ryanâs house. There were loud sobs and cries and another agonising scream.
Mrs Thomas was led out of the house while being held up by a policeman. Tears streamed down her face as she sobbed uncontrollably.
'WHO COULD DO THIS?' she screeched. 'WHY WOULD THEY HURT MY LITTLE GIRL?'
Helen managed to duck past the yellow tape policeman and prop Mrs Thomas up as she made it to the end of the garden path.
