“What happened? I must know everything!” Elizabeth said, once alone with her sister in her bedchamber.

“I am betrothed, Lizzy! Betrothed!” exclaimed Jane, twirling around the room in blissful delight. Elizabeth joined her in her joy, laughing and crying until Mrs Gardiner came to scold them with a smile.

“I thought it was my own children making all that noise!” she exclaimed, enfolding Jane in her embrace.

If possible, Mrs Gardiner was even happier than her nieces; with Jane as the mistress of Mr Bingley’s household, nothing untoward could happen to the Bennet family in the future. Under Jane’s roof, her sisters would have a home and chances to find suitable matches.

“And what of Mr Bingley? How did he propose?” asked Elizabeth, curious to know what a ‘typical’ proposal entailed.

“He fell to his knees, he apologised for everything…and the rest is cloudy,” replied Jane, blushing at the memory as she remembered well what had happened. Once in his arms, no words were necessary for a long while; their bodies knew just what to do. Their kisses and embraces were neither awkward nor timid but the passionate prelude to a lifetime of love. Much later, he promised to buy a house in London, but they were already betrothed by then. But those were her secrets she did not intend to confess, not even to her dear sister.

“I am so thrilled, you cannot imagine,” said Jane. She spoke for a while about their plans for the wedding. But in her joy, she forgot to ask about Mr Darcy or Elizabeth’s own love.

A pang of sadness tugged at Elizabeth’s heart, for she knew that no matter how close they might be in the future, the cosy bedchamber at Longbourn was lost to them forever. It was not just a place where she would sleep alone, but a privileged space where they had shared their dreams, hopes, and aspirations…now gone forever.
