Chapter Eleven

Breathing on the surface restored me. Remembering Aleea’s cry, I swam between the blue hulks of icebergs toward where I heard it last.

Rounding a spur of ice, I saw her swimming toward me and trumpeted in relief and joy. We rolled as, breathlessly, she told me how she’d watched the harpooner with one flipper chase me. She’d cried out, fearing I wouldn’t make it to the ice. Looking back toward open water, we watched the whaling fleet mill about, picking up the men from the small boats. Then side by side we swam between the protective walls to where the rest of the pod was gathered. At last we came to a wide green lagoon far from the edge of the pack and surrounded by tall ice mountains.

In a wild rush, the others greeted us. The last few stragglers were still coming in, and as each arrived, the pod swam up and surrounded the latecomer. Great was the rejoicing and the trumpeting that bounced back and forth between those walls of ice, making strange music with the singing of the ice. Only when one mentioned Old Hrobo did the pod grow silent. That evening, while the moon rose higher and whitened, the keening for Hrobo began and lasted late into the night.
