As they helped Alison dress for her wedding, Kit was unusually silent and Susannah even more of a chatterbox than normal. Alison knew it was only a matter of time before one or the other of them gave up her self-imposed restraint in favor of plain speaking; she was amazed theyâd been able to control themselves this long.
As she sat at the dressing table in her bedroom, carefully outlining her mouth with a new shade of lip color, Alison tried to guess which of them would crack first. Susannahâs frown was tiny, but it cut deep lines into her forehead. Kitâs jaw was clenched so tight her teeth must ache.
Alison felt horrible about deceiving them. Their partnership had been built on trust and caring, but now she was breaking faith with her best friends by letting them think she was going into this marriage starry-eyed and swept off her feet...and probably doomed to early disappointment.
Of course, she reminded herself, telling them the truth wouldnât be all that much better. In fact, she could think of only one difference: as soon as Kit and Susannah realized they need no longer tiptoe around Alisonâs supposed feelings for her husband-to-be, all restraint would be gone. Theyâd be every bit as horrified about the deal she and Logan had really made as they were about the supposedly romantic sudden wedding, and they wouldnât hesitate to say so.
No, things were better left as they were. Alison could never explain; only time would convince her friends that she did indeed know what she was doing, and that her choice was the right one. In a year or so, when Logan was gone from her life and she had her baby insteadâand was obviously happy to have it soâthey would begin to understand.
She looked once more at Susannahâs frown and Kitâs clenched jaw, and a rush of thankfulness swept over her. She was fortunate indeed to have these two people. She hated to cause pain to friends who loved her so much that they fretted about her happiness and worried that she was being a fool and bit their tongues to keep from arguing with her.
âItâs going to be fine, you know,â Alison said.
âThat does it.â Susannah set a hairbrush down on the dressing table with unnecessary force. âI absolutely cannot stand here any longer and pretend that Iâm happy about this. For heavenâs sake, Ali, I thought you had good sense.â
âYou think itâs awful that weâre not going to have a honeymoon,â Alison said.
Susannah shook her head. âNot at all. And Iâm not even objecting because heâs moving into your house. I think itâs crazy, butââ
âI own the row house. Heâs been renting an apartment. Whatâs so crazy about using my place and subletting his?â
âI said itâs not the house that bothers me. Itâs the whole idea of getting married so suddenly. Do you know Rita was so surprised when she heard the news that she dropped a stack of five hundred letters? It took the two of us half an hour just to pick them up, and then she said.
