Chapter Three
Languid dreams slowly melted as Diane yawned and blinked sleep from her eyes. She stretched in delight and propped herself up in bed with an arm. Lying next to her, Jaimee was still asleep. The solitude of the apartment was calming. She thought it would be nice to stay here forever, living together with Jaimee, but knew they had to break the wonderful spell and journey back to their friends in the fire station. The overcast sky outside had darken considerably since they entered the apartment.
âI canât tell if weâre losing daylight or if the clouds are just getting darker.â Diane turned and gently shook Jaimeeâs shoulder.
Jaimee jerked awake and flew into a sitting position before realizing that she was safe. âWhu..whatâs going on?â
âNothing â sorry. I didnât mean to startle you. I just think we should get going pretty soon.â Reluctant, she began to peel back the covers of the bed.
âDiane, wait.â Jaimee reached out. âDo you remember a few days ago when you asked me what happened to my girlfriend? You were wondering if she was turned?â
Nodding, Diane settled back into the bed and propped her head up with an arm and hand.
âI have to tell somebody. I want to tell you â Iâve never shared it with anyone and it eats me up inside.â Jaimee closed her eyes and wondered what Dianeâs reaction would be. âI was up in the Santa Barbara area visiting my mom for a few days and planned to drive back to LA. I never got along very well with her, but Iâd visit every once in a while.â She leaned back onto the bed. âSome weird news stories showed up on TV about some viral illness wreaking havoc around LA. Nothing really up near there â at least not yet. The news showed a lot of looting and crap going down.â
Turning on her side, Jaimee propped her head on a pillow and observed Dianeâs lean arms, shoulders and the curve of her breasts. âI was worried about Cathy, especially when she wasnât responding to my texts for nearly an entire day. I called â no answer. No response to my voicemails either. This wasnât normal. Still, I didnât want to freak out, so I waited until the next day and still nothing. I couldnât get ahold of other friends either. I said goodbye to my mom and left in a hurry not realizing the odd-looking homeless people I saw in the park were probably zombies. I raced as much as I could down the 101, but traffic was terrible and the closer I came to LA, the more wrecks there were clogging the lanes. Eventually, I made it to West Hollywood, but before I could reach the exit closest to home traffic came to a dead stop. There were people running around the freeway panicked. I mean, who does that? There had to be something bad up ahead.â
âI sat there a long time and watched people literally abandoning their cars and leaving the freeway by foot.
