I guess “I’ll think about it” translated to “let’s do it!” in Resha’s mind because the very next day she called to break the news that she’d created a Mari Me account in my name.

“Don’t worry,” she said, “I signed up, too. We can try it together. It’ll be an adventure.” My sister, the unsolicited travel agent. She’d be the first to book me a one-way ticket to Hades if she could.

“What do I have to do?” I asked.

“Download the app. I texted you your user name and password.”

I hurried off the phone to see what new chaos Resha had created in my life. The pics she posted were from our Cancun vacation. They made me seem a lot more outgoing and were surprisingly flattering. What harm could come from browsing through profiles? I clicked on the tab marked “Mr. Right.”

What kind of self-respecting guy joins a dating app? I texted Resha.

Have you found the Mr. Right tab? she replied, ignoring my bad attitude. Be sure to use the filters.

But she was too late. I was already swiping right. Again and again.

Oooo, look at that stud!

And again.

That night, I cuddled into bed with my phone to check the responses to my likes, not at all sure what to expect. I wasn’t very popular in high school and only had a couple of boyfriends in college, why would I get a lot of interest now that I’m almost forty?

To my extraordinary delight and absolute amazement, every guy responded positively. Now it was up to me to initiate a conversation. But I needed more time. Later, I was browsing Facebook when I received a message from Enzo, a guy I’d partnered with on a college writing project. We had a few mutual friends and he’d noticed a humorous comment I’d made on one of their posts.

Anna, that’s hilarious. It’s good to find you. You look fabulous! Married life must be treating you well.

So I had to explain the awful facts about my late husband.

Enzo had also lost a spouse, only his loss was on account of his wife running off with their fertility doctor. Fertility issues, another thing we had in common. Our conversation went from catch-up to profundities to playfulness, and cycled back around, with Enzo occasionally commenting on the serendipitousness of our social media meet up. I may have considered the possibility had he not moved to London. In any case, it was fun to practice flirting, even if through texts. At some point, I mentioned the twelve-year thing and he responded with a barrage of exclamation points. !!!!!!!!!!!! Probably twelve. Not that I counted. We chatted for several hours that night, and the next, and the night after that, when I told him about my foray into online dating and the men from Mari Me. His response caught me off guard.

Wouldn’t you rather be with an old friend than a complete stranger?

Hm, great question, was my ingenious response, but I added the thinking emoji for effect.

Enzo had a proposition.

I’m flying into Salt Lake next week to meet with a client.
