CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Halloween had finally arrived in Blackwood, and Joey yearned for the years past when his biggest problem was determining which costume he would wear. Now there were other issues at hand.

School had just ended, and the boys were finalizing their plan of attack. While doing so, they had all learned of Joey’s eerie nightmare about Bob Smah.

“Why would I have this nightmare now?” Joey asked. “Why all of sudden?”

“It’s because of everything that’s been going on,” Barry said thoughtfully. “One of us was bound to have nightmares at some point.”

“I guess,” Joey said, wanting to believe his friend. “But it didn’t feel like just any old nightmare. It felt like…a warning.”

The three boys continued to walk their bikes to Michael’s store. Upon arriving there, Joey tugged open the front door and they entered.

“Velcome to my coffin!” said Michael, who suddenly appeared behind his front counter wearing a very cheap vampire cape. The boys turned in alarm and saw Michael, who curled his hands like a vampire and laughed in a terrible Romanian accent.

“Michael, what gives?” Joey demanded, leaning against the counter. “Why did you tell my dad we’ve been messing around with the Smah house?”

“I’m sorry,” Michael said, his voice returning to normal. He lowered his cape-covered arms. “Was I not supposed to?”

“NO!” all three boys shouted at him, and Michael stepped back in surprise, raising his hands in surrender.

“Whoa, sorry!” he said. “But your father and I have been friends ever since we were kids and we threw those moonpies at Sister Tabitha. We tell each other everything!”

“From now on, anything we talk to you about remains a secret—got it?” Joey asked.

”I’m not sure I can agree to that, Joey, “ Michael said. “It would be irresponsible of me if I knew you were doing something potentially dangerous and I didn’t tell your parents.”

“Oh, come on,” Joey said. “If that’s the way you’re going to be, then we can’t tell you any more secrets.”

“Oh, come on!” Michael said, sounding even more childish than Joey. “Include me! I want to be included!”

“You have to swear to secrecy, Michael,” Joey warned. “We have to be able to trust you completely. And we can’t do that if you run and gossip about us with my parents.”

“Fine,” Michael agreed, and held up one hand in Scout’s Honor.

“Good,” Joey said, exhaling in relief. “My dad yelled at me because of your tattling, you know. If you see him, don’t tell him we’re going back to that house tonight. In fact, don’t even tell him I was here today.”

“You’re the boss,” Michael said. “Apparently. Say, what do you need, anyway? Some werewolf pellets? Perhaps a shrunken head from New Guinea?”

“We don’t have time for anything silly,” Joey answered. “We need something to ward off ghosts. Got anything like that?” He looked around the store as if he would spot something immediately.

“I sure do,” Michael said, grinning. “I have all kinds of stuff: potions, blessed religious relics, texts, t-shirts—”

“We need the most powerful thing you have!” Joey demanded.
