A knock on my office door dragged my focus from the event details that I was working on. When I looked up, my assistant smiled at me.

“What’s up, Celia?”

“You haven’t had lunch yet so I wanted to check on you.”

“Crap. Do I even want to know what time it is?”

When she didn’t answer, I slowly checked the time on my laptop.

Fuck.

For someone who was so concerned about everybody else, I was shit at taking care of myself.

“What do you call lunch at 3:38? Linner?”

Celia chuckled and shrugged.

“Do you want me to order something for you?”

I shook my head.

“No, I think a walk will be good to clear my head. There are still some parts of this Thanksgiving event that I haven’t quite figured out.”

Her lifted eyebrows made me raise my hands in surrender.

“Just thinking. I’m not carrying anything with me to do any work.”

“Uh-huh.”

Grinning, I rose and grabbed my handbag. We both knew that I didn’t need the laptop or even a notepad to do my work. I would scribble my thoughts on receipts and napkins if I had to. At least, I was getting out of the office and eating something. She’d have to be happy with that.

Since my business was located in a busy part of town, I opted to walk to the Mexican restaurant closest to me. The crisp fall air was refreshing. It was cold enough to keep the sweating at bay but not so cold that I missed having a jacket.

As I stepped onto the pavement, I remembered that I needed to call Michael. Based on the schedule he’d given me before, he should be available now.

“Hey, Mom.”

“Hey! It’s been a couple of weeks since we talked so I wanted to check on you.” A chill settled in my stomach when he sighed. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong, really. Things are going okay with school. I’m just trying to figure out what to do for Halloween. It’s the first year I won’t be home for your party, you know?”

I bit back the urge to tell him to come home. Darren and I had discussed being on the same page regarding Michael settling into college. Our son had never been the best at making friends so we wanted to make sure he did his best to make connections.

But if he really wants to come home…

Sighing, I gave in to my motherly instincts.

“Do you want to come home for Halloween? I’ll come for you.”

I waited for his response with bated breath – ready to change everything to accommodate him. Not only would I change the party plans but I would also drop everything and pick him up if he wanted me to.

“No, it’s okay. There are a couple of parties happening that I could go to. They might be fun.”

“Okay.” I resisted the urge to ask him if he was sure. “How are things otherwise? Do you need anything?”

“Nah, I’m good. How are you and Dad?”

Planning the kind of fun you wouldn’t believe.

Well, to be fair, he might expect it from Darren since he was always the fun, adventurous one.
