Chapter 15

I’m startled awake from a light doze on the couch when my husband, Jon, drops a thick paperback book in my lap. I’d fallen asleep while waiting for him to get home from work. I’m about to chew him out for scaring me, but I focus on the book instead. It’s a bodice-ripping romance novel with a gorgeous nobleman on the cover and a fair maiden acting all demure, as if she doesn’t want Mr. Hunky all over her.

“Uh, what’s this?”

Not wanting to be rude, I don’t tell him this is not my preferred genre. I’m more of a contemporary romantic humor type of gal. I like a good laugh while the main character does stupid shit I’d probably do while she’s attempting to find love. Think Bridget Jones’s Diary. But shouldn’t Jon know this by now?

“Well, hello to you too, Miranda.”

Jon grins at my lack of greeting, sits down on the couch, and pats his lap. That’s his signal he wants to snuggle, and today I decide to stretch out with my head in on his legs. I gaze up at him, raise my eyebrows, and wait for his answer.

“You remember my friend Ethan from college?”

I try to temper my expression because, of course, I remember his damn friend, Ethan. Every single time he mentions a friend’s name, he prefaces with it something stupid like “Do you remember that guy.…” I know it’s just his style of speech, but sometimes he acts as if I’m an idiot who remembers nothing.

He doesn’t meet up with Ethan often. They have lunch or get together every couple of months, so it’s not as if they’re best pals or anything. But Jon has a fun time with him and has stayed in contact all these years. I’ve even met Ethan a few times.

Instead of blurting out what I’m really thinking, I simply say, “Yes, I remember Ethan.”

“I met him for lunch today. His wife wrote that book, and he gave me a signed copy to give to you.”

Oh, huh? I look at the book with more interest and flip the cover over to check out the back. The author’s picture reveals a very attractive woman in her mid-20s with ash blonde hair. Way to go, Ethan. Ethan is cute, but in a nerdy way. I wouldn’t have expected him to score someone like this, and a successful writer at that. I mean, I assume once you’re published, people consider you a success… right? The cover is shiny and professional. Chloe must do pretty well for herself.

I fan through the pages and notice Chloe wrote, “For Miranda,” and signed her name, so this was a pre-planned gift. Well, that was sweet of her. I finally realize Jon’s been watching me intently this entire time while I check out the book.

“What?” I’m defensive, as if I’m doing something wrong.

“Uh, so Ethan was telling me Chloe’s birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks.…”

My stomach drops. Oh fuck, he wants me to go to a damn surprise party with him.
