“Anissa, where the fuck are you?” Gareth said into his mobile, as he stalked the hotel room floor. “Where the fuck am I? I'm in your fucking honeymoon suite, where I'm supposed to be.”

“You're with Lee, aren't you?”

I wondered if he'd fucked her yet.

“You need to get back here and be with your husband.”

I felt like a joke.

“Yes, Anissa, he's right here. I'm looking at him... No, of course he hasn't left you... Why?” Gareth looked at me.

“What?” I mouthed.

Gareth listened to whatever she was saying for several minutes. He grunted his only replies. Then he hung up.

“What is it?” I demanded. “Gareth, please, tell me.”

He looked pale as he took a seat.

“What'd she say?”

“She... She'll tell you herself, Mark.”

“What d'you mean? When? I don't even know where she is.”

Gareth slid his phone in his pocket. “She's coming to see you.” He stood up again. “I have to go.”

To her? Not a chance! “You're staying right here where I can keep a fucking eye on you, Gareth.”

He put his palm on my shoulder, then shook his head. “No, mate, you don't understand. Whatever this Lee guy, this master, has said to her... She never wants to see me again.”

“Bullshit,” I said, almost spitting.

“No, Mark. You and I both know Anissa. She wasn't bullshitting. She meant what she said.” He walked to the door. “It's over between us.”

I watched him in disbelief.

“She must be somewhere in the hotel, Mark. She said she'll be here in a few minutes. I really better go. She doesn't want to see me again.” He opened the door. “But promise me one fucking thing, mate.”

“What's that, Gareth?”

“Win.”

“Win?”

“Win your wife, Mark. Don't let him take her away from you. Not after all you've been through... It's you she loves.”
