Indians have always enjoyed bringing beauty into their everyday and ceremonial lives, and horses provide them with a variety of items to decorate. In the past, the patterns and images that decorated horses and horse gear usually had special meanings. People continue these ways, but not as many people seek visions and dreams as they once did. But even today tipis and horses at Indian gatherings may be decorated by special symbolic designs. Each tribe developed its own favorite themes and designs, so that one could recognize the tribal identity of an encampment even from a distance.
