“MEN ARE PIGS.”

Kelly Jean straightened on her bar stool and held up her half-empty margarita. “They’re lower than pigs,” she said, her words slurred. “They’re...pig’s feet.” She hiccuped once, then took another swig of her drink.

Lianne had found Kelly Jean weeping into her tequila when she walked in the bar. At first, she hesitated, not wanting to get sucked into another conversation with the terminally perky newlywed. But the girl looked so forlorn, so absolutely miserable, that she couldn’t let her sit alone, drowning her sorrows. And she had to find out what Kip had done to throw his adoring wife into such a state. So she sat down beside her and ordered a gin and tonic.

“Do you know what he said to me?” Kelly Jean asked for the third time.

Lianne smiled, snatching her glass up before Kelly Jean knocked it over. “You told me already.”

“He said that he didn’t marry me for my brains. Can you believe that? How could he say something so nasty? I thought he loved me.”

Her eyes filled with fresh tears, and Lianne reached out and patted her hand sympathetically. Kelly Jean grabbed a bar napkin and blew her nose. “I mean, I know I’m not as smart as he is. But he always wants to be the one who knows everything. I thought that made him happy. So I just went along. I’m not that dumb, you know. I could have passed every one of my classes in college, maybe even gottena B if I had wanted to. It’s—it’s just that they didn’t seem very important at the time. Not after I knew I was going to marry my Kippy.”

“Maybe you should have thought about what you wanted,” Lianne suggested.

She sniffled. “Darn tootin’. From now on, I’m number one.” She jabbed a thumb to her chest with such enthusiasm, she nearly knocked herself off her bar stool.

Lianne reached out to steady her. “I think you should tell Kip how you feel.”

Kelly Jean’s eyes went wide. “I couldn’t do that.”

“Why not?”

“Because he never listens when I try to talk about us. He thinks that we shouldn’t have to talk about our relationship. As far as he’s concerned, everything is just hunky-dory.” She threw out her hands, nearly hitting Lianne in the face. “Well, I’m saying it’s not. In fact, I’m saying our relationship stinks like a month-old salmon steak.”

“That bad, huh.”

“Like the one that was left in the trunk of Kip’s BMW,” she added. “One that I forgot to take out after I went grocery shopping for his mother. Boy, was he ticked off. His precious car, all smelly.” She giggled. “I thought it was kind of funny.”

“So what are you going to do?” Lianne asked. “You can’t go on like this.”

“Maybe I should tell him he’s a pig and let him figure out what to do.”

A redhead sitting a few stools away leaned over and looked at them both. “I thought our honeymoon would be perfect,” she said woefully. “We had a fight this morning about my mother and he decided to go golfing, all by himself.
