Chapter 7
Fresh Stream Water
To Carrâs Water
A few streams of fresh drinking water were at the northern localities of the village. Tom Carrâs Water was one of them. The owner of the last house at Alha Town was a man called Tom Carr. The stream was named after him. This water is situated at about one hundred or more feet from the gradual rising spot of the burial ground to prevent it from contamination. Actually, the stream oozes from some stony place not far off.
When Tokeh hamlet was constructed, its inhabitants in their generations began to resort to Tom Carrâs Water for wholesome freshwater. They usually crossed their river in order to reach the stream.
The Girl Wharf
This is a very small bay used partly by âKroo-canoeâ anglers as a place for safe landing and those who wished to learn the art of swimming. Likewise, those who would like to have sea or saltwater bathing. For visitors to the village of York, whether they came from the colony or from some other foreign country, this small bay provides a place where they could have a good time if desired.
The name Girl Wharf had nothing particular to do with the female sex. Most probably, it might merely suggest that the place was free from the raging and billowy sea that might be too risky for women swimmers.
Foray Wharf
This is a foreshore cave on the southside of York Village. One of Sierra Leoneâs colonial surgeons Dr. Harts visited it in or about the year 1875.
This stream of wholesome fresh drinking water from the cave produces a perennial supply to the inhabitants at the southern side of the village. How far distant is its source inside the cave cannot be guessed but supplies greater quantity of water in the wet season than in the dry. People of some of the other villages alleged that this water has some mysterious powers whereby boys, girls, and the youth of York made clever results in their school days and in the various tradecrafts at which they were apprenticed. Foray Water does not possess any such powers.
There were two large houses and some smaller ones which served as lodgings and other necessary uses. They were usually occupied by the superintendents and other officers in charge of the contingent of the repatriatesâuntil town lots were assigned to them and their families or households. After which, they were discharged from King Yard.
