“He put a tool within our reach,” Shawn said. It was dark, the bulb out. We had no idea if this meant it was night.

“Our hands are useless,” I said.

“But you still could’ve got it with your mouth,” Shawn said.

“And then what?”

“That’s not the point.”

We were mostly whispering but the echo made it all too loud.

“I’d say that’s definitely the point,” I said.

“It’s the fact that he’s sloppy,” Shawn said.

“Billy’s dead,” Terrence said. His voice splintered wood in the dark.

“That’s okay,” Shawn said.

“What do you mean, okay?” I asked.

“That’s happened,” Shawn said. “And so now we’re past it.”

“We’re not past anything.”

“It’s all about recalibrating,” he said. And I sensed some feeling in my fingers yet, as I wanted to reach across the space and slap him. “Whatever’s happened has happened and so we start over, start everything over, at that point. It’s the only way to move forward.”

I laughed. My chains rattled.

“No time to mourn?” I asked.

A few nights ago, we’d been laughing at a tavern. Lying down to sleep at an inn in Austria.

Now?

“You can move forward as you mourn,” Shawn said. “Listen, I mean it: he’s careless. We’re going to pull this off.”

“This isn’t a football game, Shawn.”

Then the grating stone again.

We went quiet as the door opened and the madman’s shoes scuffed against the floor.

“What’s going on?” Terrence said. “What are you doing?”

What was he doing?

“Terrence!” I cried. “What’s happening?”

“I don’t know! He’s breathing by my face!”

I heard a quick slashing. Terrence cried out. The shoes scuffed to where Shawn hung.

A second swipe. Shawn grunted.

Had he slit their throats? Had he gutted my friends in the dark?

He came toward me.

“No no no!” I shouted. “Please don’t!”

But he did. I felt the blade across my chest.

And the sound of the madman exiting was eclipsed by the rattling of our chains.
